It WAS disturbing, out of control and so fascinating you couldn't take your eyes off it.
I feel like Lydon has never done himself any favors when it comes to complaining about things that went wrong in his career. He has always come off just the wrong side of whiney and thus loses any empathy I have for him.
I think he's got a genius streak that's never been fully realized and was always going to be too much for someone like McLaren to allow to blossom. The first 3 PiL albums are monumental, with Metal Box being the one that finds itself in my Top 10 all time albums.
I agree that along with JD - and I have to also include Magazine, PiL define the beginnings of Post Punk.Echorichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02853063796135973187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6408194908462305523.post-66459237255971811182015-08-14T18:45:29.281+01:002015-08-14T18:45:29.281+01:00It's all about the bass. It's all about the bass.Swiss Adamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13119322217065850020noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6408194908462305523.post-33953545926961937842015-08-14T18:25:27.505+01:002015-08-14T18:25:27.505+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02423624920558505937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6408194908462305523.post-72600205142986680902015-08-14T18:25:27.346+01:002015-08-14T18:25:27.346+01:00Actually I meant bass, not percussion... anyway alw...Actually I meant bass, not percussion... anyway always jumping!Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02423624920558505937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6408194908462305523.post-52452909339306437272015-08-14T18:23:47.893+01:002015-08-14T18:23:47.893+01:00All great clips and weird to think of them on ToTP...All great clips and weird to think of them on ToTP at all really!
I can't tell you how excited I was when I first heard that he was forming a new band. I could hardly wait for the single... I had no idea what to expect (I suppose I thought it would still sound Pistolian but it was like nothing I could have imagined!) I bought it from the local record shop with my mates on a Saturday afternoon and then we went and sat on the concrete steps outside the local shopping centre so I could unwrap the fold-out newspaper sleeve to look at it and make sure, of course, that everyone walking by saw it too, not that anyone would care... but, you know how it is... (I don't have it now, but it was a great read!) And then the excitement of getting it home to play it (my first ever hearing).
Metal Box was an exciting purchase too, though a bugger to play because the vinyl always seemed to skip, one of the problems of having a lot of percussion I think (I always had that same problem with very percussive records, the Clash's Armagideon Time being another.)
Oh, what memories... thanks!Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02423624920558505937noreply@blogger.com
