The first R.E.M. album I bought for myself, having lived for years with a borrowed copy of Document and a mixtape covering the albums from Murmur to Out Of Time. Although there are arguably better albums, this remains my favourite. There's a case to be made for Pageant, especially side one, being Stipe's strongest lyrical work, I think.Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05267504526414194713noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6408194908462305523.post-61526847679840832662021-07-30T11:31:20.196+01:002021-07-30T11:31:20.196+01:00I keep coming back to LRP. I'm not sure if the band was struggling for material around this time, but two of the songs on LRP date right back to the band's earliest days (Just A Touch was played at their second ever gig), along with some of the tracks they demoed for the album which never made the final cut. Even Hyena dates back to 1984, just after the Reckoning sessions.

I agree with you that side one - the first four tracks especially - is superb, as strong an opening of any album I own. Side two does have its moments though. The original planned tracklist (which remains on the back of the album's artwork) has all the fast songs on side one and the slower ones on side 2. I reckon the decision to re-sequence them was the right one.

I might well do a piece on LRP and see if I can come up with an even better version of it.TheRobsterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18277941961790844321noreply@blogger.com
