Pull Back The Curtains

I've been feeling a bit uninspired this week and busy with work stuff. Then driving home last night this shuffled onto the car's stereo- This Is The Day by The The. Compared to a lot of Matt Johnson's stuff it's pretty subtle, those lovely observational lyrics, the wheezy rhythm and that gorgeous accordion. And compared to his grand geopolitical songs and denunciations of religion it shows that sometimes it's the little human touches that make a song connect. This is the day, her life will surely change.

This Is The Day

  1. It's been a while since I played any of Matt Johnson's music, must dig something out. Great to hear this again.

  2. Soul Mining and Infected are just such a part of my musical life, I knew what you were posting just from the title, without thinking about it!

  3. Great choice. I do love this - and you may already know I like an accordion in the right place too! It always makes me feel uplifted. I actually like the Manics' cover of it too. I remember when Soul Mining came out and it was like nothing I'd ever heard before!
I'm friends with Matt's very lovely and talented older brother and I'm afraid I just cannot let a mention of The The go by without acknowledging the impact of his sleeve artwork too!

  4. Much as I love Infected, Soul Mining is the one. Much love still out there for Matt Johnson and rightly so.

  6. A song that once heard can stick with you for hours or days. It's a song for everyman/everywoman that celebrates life good and bad.
Soul Mining is brilliant and one of my favorite albums.

  7. Thanks to bring Matt Johnson back. As all the other ones said - his first records were brilliant and I play them still from time to time.

  8. There was a track from Dusk used as background music in the 1st episode of Catastrophe..
Naked Self which is more recent is also well worth a listen.
