Dusky

This was my view from behind the decks at a friend's 45th birthday party I played records at on Friday night, decks on the decking with fairy lights and a chandelier in the tree above my head. It was good fun, playing records outdoors for a small but appreciative crowd who wore a hole in the lawn. The man from next door (who went to school with Johnny Marr) asked 'have you got any Northern?' Guests had been asked to bring any 45s they might want playing and a man from a few roads away turned up with Underworld's Rez, which somehow I wasn't expecting.

This new one from East Yorkshire's Mono Life is a lovely piece of work and bodes well for the new album he's working on. Slow, down tempo, pushing all the right buttons and with a feel of those few minutes when the shadows lengthen and the sun slips down.

  1. That's a good way to start the day, SA. Great song from one of the best artists that appeared to me this year.

  5. Drew- I should have made notes but didn't. From memory, and I may be missing a few things here- started with some Balearic stuff including a couple of Weatherall 12s and Little Fluffy Clouds, then some reggae and ska (Hollie Cook, Susan Cadogan, Peckings, couple of others), Tainted Love (Gloria Jones), Chuck Wood, Bobby Fuller Four's I Fought the Law, The Kinks, Magnificent 7, some 80s pop (by popular demand) Soft Cell that sort of thing, Geno, Teardrops Explodes Reward, Town Called Malice, Buzzcocks, True Faith, Wrote for Luck, Loaded, couple of other Mcr things, then into house (Pump Up The Volume, S'Express, Voodoo Ray, Your Love, U Got The Love) some other house stuff, Rez, Born Slippy. Then it got a bit random, including the records guest had brought- Jean Jeanie, Common People, The Strokes, more Clash, Turning Japanese, Ace of Spades etc. In fact all the records are still in the box so I could probably work out the rest from looking in there.

  6. What it really made me want to do was do a night of dance music- balearic records, then house and then some techno.
