Big Star have got the September song scene covered, Alex Chilton's 1973 masterpiece may really be all you need, Chilton looking back at his past relationships and marrying those plaintive words to some achingly gorgeous chords. The guitars and Alex's ragged voice actually sound like summer turning into autumn.
In 1986 The Bangles covered September Gurls, a mid 80s Los Angeleno, Paisley Underground pop update that more than does justice to the song.
