The Early Years have released their third album in twenty years- Modern Moonlight. Their debut came out in 2006 and was followed by II in 2016, ten year gaps the norm for the band. The London based four piece take the cosmische and Mototik sounds of the West German guitar/ kraut groups and mix them with nods to Bowie, mid- 80s Creation (The Loft and The Weather Prophets), The Only Ones, Brian Eno (including some use of the Oblique Strategies cards...) and the shoegaze/ psychedelia of early Verve. First song A New Way Of Living bursts into life sounding like all of those at the same time, Roger Mackin's guitar a Heroes style drone.
On side two The Gift is a highlight, a song with a groove and a collision of guitars and disco, post punk/ punk funk, echoes of LCD Soundsystem, a heady dance floor brew.
Modern Moonlight finishes with Silver Lips (Champagne Eyes), a soaring cosmische ballad, Julian Cope's East Easy Rider gone for a glow up with a guest spot from singer Lorena Quantanilla (from Mexican duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete).
The remaining seven songs match these three, a sublime marriage of guitars and synths, live drums and vocals, loops and drones and proper songs. One of the albums of the year- get it at Bandcamp and other reliable record shops.
