It Takes Two by Rob Base and DJ E- Z Rock is one of 80s hip hop's defining songs, the Lyn Collins Think breakbeat (a James Brown sample) being the undercarriage of the song. It Takes Two is 1988 rap/ sampling culture laid out on a plate, a hyper- dynamic slice of music with the 'it takes two to make a thing go right' line, slap bang at the centre of the song. Rob Base rhymes over the top, laid back but on it.
Sadly Rob Base died a few days ago on 22nd May, aged just 59. Having turned 56 just a few days before that, it seems a very young age to depart. Rob left a certificated banger behind him, one of those tunes from the late 80s/ early 90s where hip hop, house and indie were found next to each other in DJ sets and on dancefloors.
Rob Base RIP.
