Raise Your Hands If You Think You Understand

While we're in the Weatherall area I thought I'd post this for Friday morning. It popped up on the mp3 player the other day driving to work with the sun shining and sounded really good. Bocca Juniors were the inhouse studio band of the Boys Own collective/magazine/cultural trendsetters/ex-football hooligans. In the studio this amounted to Andrew Weatherall, Terry Farley, Pete Heller, Hugo Nicholson and vocalist Anna Haigh, along with for this record a massive piano sample from Thrashing Doves' Jesus On The Payroll. So, it's got those pianos, well-balearic all-roundness, Anna Haigh's Alastair Crowley quoting lyrics, and a rap in the middle as many good songs had back then.

I just got my record player hooked up a couple weeks ago and decided to get some stuff off discogs - so I got this and Substance (the other Bocca Juniors single). I prefer Raise I think - that Piano is huge!

I'm feeling like Hugo Nicholson's engineering was a huge part of the Weatherall sound in 89-91. Has he done other stuff with those deep bassy grooves and that lovely crunch that all these vintage Weatherall tracks have?

Love the blog! Keep up the great postings!

Thanks for popping in Henry. Raise is better than Substance, I agree. Try Weatherall's remix of Finitribe '101 Sonic Shuffle' for deep bass and lovely crunch.

Oh man the 101 sonic shuffle is one of my favorites. I went so far as to order that Finitribe LP, and I was disappointed in the rest of the disc as well as the shorter edit of 101 that's on the "Unexpected Groovy Treat" LP. Though they do have a cool cyber-utopian thing going on that's appealing in the current climate..

Other favorites of mine are Weatherall's Perpetual Dawn remix, his Jah Wobble/ Bomba remix, and the "World in Motion" Weatherall/New Order thing.

Thanks again for your enthusiasm and expertise - see you 'round the interwebs!

Do it ctel. Having done 75 Weatherall posts beginning to feel like I'm overdoing it but there's always another to feature. Maybe we should just do all the remixes, in order, from the start...

Henry-I've posted all of those already. Although there's the other perpetual dawn mix I haven't done yet...

Adam you and ctel are definitely all over this stuff - I probably got some of those tracks from you. I like your completeist urges though. What are some Weatherall RIYL/similar stuff? Definitely digging The Orb, KLF, others.. looking for those crunchy house grooves, the kind where the tamborine, open high hat, triangle, and other perc in super-compressed sample all blend into a glorious crunchiness.

Looking forward to continuing my aesthetic education with you.
