Brand New Toy

Paul Weller put out a 7" only single for Record Shop Day last year and then got pissed off with the whole thing when scalpers stuck copies up on ebay immediately and said he wouldn't do it again.  The song itself was an unholy mash of piano, Small Faces, a dash of Lionel Bart, a touch of Bowie and a borrowed line or two from T-Rex. And rather good.

I've got huge respect for Weller, still pushing and prodding at perceived musical boundaries after all he's done. 'Brand New Toy' is a great song and how flippin' cool does he look in that photo?

This is wonderful, SA. I'm not sure why much (but not all) of his solo work has left me cold, but I just keep buying and hoping.

Brian- he's hit and miss for sure.
The Swede- you've got to be good to get away with white denim.

That really is one cool photo. Solo wise, just when you think he hasn't got anything new he surprises us, think there is some life in the old dog yet...

Have to agree that since his first solo album, Weller has been hit and miss for me. I respect his musical path, but realize that not every influence on him has meant that much to me.
He is at his best when he has tried to reach a new musical plane based on those influences and for me at his worst when you can pick them out so very easily.

I would never had known that was Weller....this would not be out of place on Hunky Dory - the tracks that didn't make the final cut!

I used to have a white denim jacket (jeans too) never looked as good as him though

My favourite solo weller, apart from his first solo album, has been since 2005, Floorboards Up was brilliant. And I've loved his work since. Have You Made Up Your Mind, from 22 Dreams is one of my all time top ten Weller songs.

Another new one coming up this year apparently. Looking forward to that.

Just caught up with this. I always get around to buying all of Weller's albums because you know, even if some of it isn't quite 'fab', one or two tracks will be awesome. This is pretty groovy.
