I Could Never Hate You

Heavenly Records is twenty five years old this year, founded and run by the seemingly all round good guy Jeff Barratt, and they're running a series of celebrations. Saint Etienne's second single, released in September 1990, is one of the label and group's absolute high points, a cover of a Field Mice song and in the original version with vocals by Donna Savage (this being before Sarah Cracknell joined them). The single was followed by a second 12" with some remixes by Pete Heller, which are just perfect.

Kiss And Make Up is quite possibly my favourite Saint Etienne. But it has to be the original version. I like that it is actually a Janet Jackson rip off - When I Think Of You - no really it is, listen to both back to back.

When this was out I was working at the Virgin Megastore in London and this was one of those records that all the staff loved. Unfortunately because it wasn't a big seller the single dept were only allowed to order 2 copies of it on the restock. I intercepted the delivery and bought them both, one for me and one for the girl I was chasing at the time. Worked too.

Nice choice, Adam. I think I might be with Simon on this one, though. Probably because I could still hear a little bit of the Field Mice in that one. Big fan of the 'Snowball' 10".

I should make myself clear, the original mix is superb. Just thought this was interesting to post and some people might not have heard it. Glad it worked out with the girl Simon.

Love all the mixes and can't choose between them. If I play this I end up following it with the original or vice versa.

Classic!! But it has to be The Field Mice for me too...

Picking a favorite or even a representative Saint Etienne track might require a bit of madness. I'll vote equally for Just A Little Overcome, Lose That Girl, You're In A Bad Way and Burt Out Car. But hell there are a few dozen I could list. My iPhone playlist is 40 tracks long and that's probably short.

Haha I have over 300 Saint Etienne tracks on the pod. I couldn't organise a playlist!

Make it easy and just listen to Foxbase Alpha, a great album. I also really like Foxbase Beta as well

We're off on a tangent but Foxbase Alpha in this camp too.
