Sign On You Crazy Diamond

...was a line in a Half Man Half Biscuit song. Not that that's what's here today. I'm not a fan of Pink Floyd. Most of this is irrational (or rational) prejudice formed in the 1980s. I watched The Wall and hated it. The sleeves are pretentious. The music always seemed pretentious too, too 6th form, pseudo profound. Their fans are... well, Pink Floyd fans. Roger Waters seems totally disagreeable. I don't like Dave Gilmore's face. And so on. In the late 80s as a student in Liverpool there was a pub we frequented, The Brookhouse on Smithdown Road, and each night as the bell was rung for last orders someone always (and I mean always) put on Money. It ruined every last pint I had. I still get chills at the sound of those cash registers.

However, as as been noted here several times, I do like The Orb. It's a circle I can't square. This came on a magazine cd recently, The Orb covering Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part Two). It's The Orb, so y'know, maybe Floyd can't be all bad. Can't believe I just typed that.

I love Pink Floyd, post Barret pre Waters leaving, I know it's all self indulgent wank but there you go. Oh and I don't think Waters is quite as disagreeable as painted by Dave Gilmour and those music journalists who were all part of the Whistle Test at one time or another.

And the Orb, well they're the Orb. I can even forgive Alex P Pomme Fritz.

I used to love PF, and spent much of the 80s with a Wall poster proudly displayed. These days I'm not sure what I think. Whenever I put on the big albums from the mid-late 70s I want to like them but quickly get bored, but I love the acid/ hippy stuff more and more. Funnily enough I feel the same about the Orb. Other god-awful juke-box closing time interfaces: Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway to Heaven, Sweet Child O' Mine. Ker-ching.

I think I finally saw the error of my ways when I saw them in the early 90s and there was a 10 minute sax solo and reggae breakdown in the middle of Money. Pretty horrific however you want to look at it.

I still retain that irrational punk anti-floyd prejudice.

But what's with the wma? Why no mp3?
