Taped

Michael is more than happy for me to share with you the Factory cassette given away with Select magazine in 1991. If your eyesight can't make out the text from the inlay card above you've got songs by Northside, New Order, Cath Carroll, Happy Mondays, The Wendys, Revenge, Electronic and Vini Reilly. A mixed bag but definitely worth grabbing. All the songs can be found here as individual files. The tape was given a Factory catalogue number, a real honour. The Factory catalogue numbering system is worth a post of its own at some point I think.

You can also get Michael's mp3s of the Creation Records compilation tape here (Sheer Taft, Love Corporation, Boo Radleys, Swervedriver, Slowdive, The Telescopes, Teenage Fanclub, Silverfish and Bill Drummond, almost all rare, out-of-print songs). If you click here you can find the Secret Tracks 2 compilation (Primal Scream, Ride, St Etienne, One Dove, Aphex Twin, Lush and Frank Black amongst others). All transferred from gloriously hissy cassette, Drew's favourite format. Dive in.

I only wish I still had a cassette player in me car! Got out of the house this morning at 06:15 hours, and my windows were completely frozen for the first time this year. Of course the ice scraper was still in the boot of the car, most probably hidden underneath the spare wheel. I don't know, 'cos obviously I couldn't see anything because a) it still was totally dark outside and b) I drive a cheap car, no illuminated boot or something!

Now, back in the old days, I would have just chosen one of the many cassette shells that constantly were in the car at various places and would have used it to scratch the ice off the windows.

But these days? Well, now, try to do this with a fucking USB stick, Jesus Christ!!!

That's a great idea Dirk, a usb stick in the shape of the top half of a tape box.

I still have a tape player in my car and have used cassette boxes to scrape the windscreen too.

CD cases are good for that as well, vinyl, not so much. Although you're probably unlikely to have a turntable in your car anyhow.

There's a clip of Andrew Loog Oldham driving round London in the mid 60s with a turntable in his Rolls playing 7" singles.

Cassette boxes were simply perfect for scraping the ice from the windscreen. In my youth, back in a time when men were men and winters were truly cold, I made TDK a fortune. Now they're all gathering dust in the shed.
HUGE thanks to Michael, by the way.

I was a Maxell man myself. Never left the house without at least one in my pocket. Glad that I could give a bit back as I've been dropping in here and to Acid Ted for years and have gotten untold riches.

I got a Joe from Manchester to Alty about 15 years ago and the taxi driver did have a turntable and vinyl set up, lots of soul music, a bit of elvis, very bizarre but a great trip.
