We Learn Dances, Brand New Dances

I'm not sure if this is a 1977 themed week or an Iggy Pop themed week. Or if it's a theme week at all. In 1981 Grace Jones covered Nightclubbing, from Iggy's The Idiot- it was the name of the album as well as a cover of the song. Rhythm kings Sly and Robbie on bass and drums root the whole thing in dub coupled with a New Wave sheen and some hiss. In Iggy's version he's in the nightclub but dazed and distanced, an outsider looking in, numbed by party drugs. In this version Grace is imperious, glacial, in the middle of the dancefloor.

When you think about it, Grace Jones with Sly & Robbie covering an Iggy Pop song is one of the most inspired ideas in pop music. The fact it actually happened is remarkable.

Wait a minute... I've just realised there are TWO Bagging Areas! A Blogspot one and a Wordpress one.....

Robster said it, inspired indeed.

Two for the price of one Robster- this is the main one, where all the action is (such as it is). The wordpress one is a back-up. Not long after I started blogging Google blogger deleted a load of blogs without warning so I decided to import everything into a wordpress one just in case it happened to me. It's better here tbh- there are more people to talk to.

Another contender for my favourite album of all time. No one bosses a cover version like Grace and the All Stars

Best description/comparison of Grace's version I have ever read. Let me know where to send the royalties. I will be using that forevermore.
